Grammar notes

The future with باش

باش (bech) before the verb expresses intention or the near future.

  • باش نمشيbech nemchiI'm going to leave / I mean to go
  • باش ناكلbech nekelI'm going to eat
  • باش تجي ؟bech tji?Are you going to come?

The plural of verbs (-ou)

Add -و (-ou) to the end of the verb for the plural (we/you/they).

  • نمشيوnemchiouWe go (a7na)
  • تمشيوtemchiouYou go (intouma)
  • يمشيوyemchiouThey go (houma)

Did you know?

تَوّا tawwa (now, right away) comes up constantly: تَوّا نْجِي, I'm on my way… a right away that's often rather elastic.

People nearly always slip in إن شاء اللّه inchallah (God willing) before a plan: غُدْوة نِجِي، إن شاء اللّه. Leaving it out sounds presumptuous, as though you held the future in your hands.
